Sperm Microfluidics

Male Infertility

Male factors are responsible for about 50% of infertility, which means that male factors contribute to infertility at approximately the same rate as female factors. Factors contributing to male factor infertility include

  • Age over 40
  • Alcohol, smoking, illicit drug use
  • Environment
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Lifestyle - late nights, excess mobile use, unhealthy diet etc.
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Past infections

How is sperm selected conventionally in the ART?

intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is often used to address male factor infertility. It involves selecting sperm which watching under a microscope and injecting the sperm directly into an egg. Currently, embryologists select sperm ICSI based on how the sperm look and move.

How is Sperm prepared before ICSI?

Standard sperm preparation procedures include the swim-up technique and density gradient separation. Each has its weaknesses. Density gradient separation can select viable sperm, but it may also produce high DNA fragmentation, causing harm to the sperm. Sperm DNA damage is associated with a significantly increased risk of pregnancy loss after IVF and ICSI The swim-up technique separates "good swimmers" from others. But where sperm counts are low or sperm motility is reduced, these and other methods are not the most efficient ways to select high-quality sperm.

What is microfluidics?

Microfluidics is a sperm sorting device (Sperm sorter) and separates motile sperm with good DNA. Microfluidic technology is natural and effective sperm separation. It is simple to use. There is no centrifugation and hence less DNA damage. Microfluidics results in sorted sperm with significantly higher motility and compared to non-sorted sperm This simple, easy to use, and efficient technique may ultimately improve upon current methods of sperm selection.

How it microfluidics useful?

Sperms sorted using Microfluidics sperm sorter result in better quality sperm which `can then be used for IUI, IVF or ICSI. It is very useful for cases in which the semen sample has poor semen parameters and helps in improving the outcomes such as fertilisation, good quality embryos and implantation leading to successful pregnancy and also minimised miscarriage rates
