Laser Assisted Hatching

What is Laser Assisted Hatching?

Laser Assisted Hatching is an IVF technique where a beam of laser is used to create an opening artificially in the outer shell of the embryo called Zona Pellucida. This technique helps in creating an opening in the zona helping the hatching. This in turn increases the chances of implantation of the embryo to the mother’s womb. This is done before transferring the embryo into the uterus. This requires expensive laser equipment and expertise to use it.

Need for Laser Assisted Hatching:

n IVF, the fertilised eggs are cultured in the lab in order to divide and develop into an embryo. During IVF, fertilised eggs are placed into the woman’s womb (Uterus). When the embryo is placed in the uterus, the embryo must hatch and implant when placed or transferred into the woman’s uterus. A healthy embryo breaks the Zona pellucida, gets connected to the womb (Implantation) and achieves a successful pregnancy.

In some cases, the Zona Pellucida is hardened and the embryo fails to hatch by breaking the hardened shell. When the embryo fails to hatch and implant, it results in no pregnancy i.e. IVF Failure. The reason for failure of embryo hatching can be because of harder Zona Pellucida and a reason behind a failed IVF Cycle. It is a fact that every fertilised egg (embryo) cannot guarantee a successful pregnancy.

How successful is Laser-Assisted Hatching?

Laser Assisted Hatching increases the success of IVF treatment. Studies from researchers revealed that assisted hatching helps in improving the pregnancy rate in a certain group of patients.

How safe is Laser Assisted Hatching?

Among all the methods used, Laser Assisted Hatching is said to be the most effective and successful and also the safest. In this process, the embryologist uses equipment which sends a laser beam to create a breakage in the Zona in order to make the embryo to hatch. It also helps in allowing the embryo and endometrium to get in contact sooner. This process doesn’t affect the quality and causes no harm to the embryo. Conventional assisted hatching uses an acidic chemical solution to dissolve the shell of the embryo, in Laser Assisted Hatching a small breakage is made on the zona and it is faster and also works gently on the embryo.

Does everyone need Laser Assisted Hatching in IVF?

No, everyone who undergoes IVF treatment doesn’t need Laser Assisted Hatching. In most cases embryos hatch and implant without any Laser Assisted Hatching in the uterus. In India, not all IVF centres have the availability of Laser Assisted Hatching.

Who is Laser Assisted Hatching is recommended for?
  1. Women who are aged above 35
  2. Having unsuccessful IVF cycles
  3. Harder or thicker Zona
  4. Few embryos
  5. Poor-quality embryos
  6. IVF done from frozen oocytes
